A security officer at Van Andel Arena, in Grand Rapids, Michigan received non-life threatening injuries from a stabbing which occurred Sunday Feb. 21st. According to new reports, the security officer had escorted the person out of the arena and into the parking lot when he was attacked. The reason for the removal from the arena was not reported.
It seems more and more, security officers, armed and unarmed are becoming the victims of assaults. With the increased number of private security personnel across the nation, and with the limited training some of these officers receive is that one of the reasons for this increase? Are our private security officers under trained? Are they under equipped.
In a two year study done by the National Association of Private Officers, 169 private security officers were killed and another 41,000 were injured. In 2008, 138 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty, 39 due to gun fire and one from stabbing. With that number being 193 line of duty deaths in 2007. Deaths and injuries to private security officers go for the most part unreported and there is no real data base to show the numbers.
While I was still in Virginia, a security officer working a night club in Frederisckburg, VA was shot and killed by a teenager he had removed from the club for being underage. The security officer was unarmed, and unprepared for this type of attack. He had no real training in security, having been employed more as a bouncer then security officer.
The question I pose is this, should security officers, armed and unarmed have mandatory training standards similar to those in Virginia and some other states? What do you feel should be the minimum number of hours? Thoughts on subjects?
